This week marks the anniversary of when Alfred Edersheim, a pastor and Jewish convert to Christianity known for his scholarly works on the life of Jesus, died at the age of 74.

A native of Vienna, Austria, Edersheim came to faith in Christ in the 1840s after meeting Scottish Presbyterian ministers in Hungary, opting to enter the ministry soon after.

Edersheim translated multiple German theological works into English and wrote a couple of works, most notably the 1883 book The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, a commentary on the Gospels that draws heavily from Jewish tradition and history.

While he was initially a Presbyterian minister, Edersheim became an Episcopalian in 1875 and was ordained a priest in the Church of England. Failing health prompted him to move to Denton, France, where he died.
