Mark Carney: 5 things to know about the new Liberal Party leader, Justin Trudeau's successor

5. Carney vows to combat Trump's tariffs, balks at Canada becoming 51st state
During his victory speech after winning Sunday’s leadership election, Carney condemned U.S. President Donald Trump for putting “unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell and how we make a living.” Carney claimed that Trump's actions were an "attack" on "Canadian families, workers and businesses.”
“We cannot let him succeed,” Carney added. “The Canadian government has rightly retaliated and is rightly retaliating with our own tariffs that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impact here in Canada.”
Carney assured Liberal Party members that “My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect.” He also dismissed Trump’s suggestion that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state: “Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape or form.”
