Mark Carney: 5 things to know about the new Liberal Party leader, Justin Trudeau's successor

2. He's Catholic
In 2015, as he led the Bank of England, the international Catholic publication The Tablet named Carney the top Catholic in the U.K. in its list of “the top 100 lay Catholics” in the country.
Carney was educated at St. Francis Xavier High School in Edmonton. As highlighted in Tablet’s profile, the economist attended a two-day conference in 2014 titled “The Global Common Good: Towards a More Inclusive Economy,” spearheaded by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. Pope Francis delivered remarks at the event.
After the conference, Carney signed his name to a statement declaring: “We cannot understand the Good News of Jesus Christ — the gospel of dignity and fraternity, of justice and peace — without being aware of real poverty.” At a gathering in London that same year focused on “Inclusive Capitalism,” Carney shared his belief that “it is necessary to recognize the importance of values and beliefs in economic life.”
The Tablet’s profile of Carney concluded by noting that he attended mass at St. Mary’s Church in Hampstead.
