Mark Carney: 5 things to know about the new Liberal Party leader, Justin Trudeau's successor

1. Carney has lived in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom

According to a biography on Carney’s website, Carney was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, but obtained a scholarship to attend college in the United States. He studied at Harvard, graduating in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. 

Carney continued his studies in England, receiving a master’s degree in economics from Oxford University in 1993. He graduated from the same institution with a doctorate degree in economics two years later. Nearly two decades later, Carney returned to the U.K. in 2013 to lead the Bank of England after serving as governor of the Bank of Canada. 

According to the Bank of England’s website, Carney served as governor of the U.K.’s Central Bank from 2013-2020. Most recently, he has served as the United Nations’ Special Envoy for Climate and Finance.
