Amanda Tyler of the progressive Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and the group Christians Against Christian Nationalism, took to social media to commend the bishop for her remarks.

“Bishop Mariann is an example to all faith leaders and to all Americans of the value of separation of religion and government,” Tyler tweeted. “The independence of the church gives space to speak truth of power. We will only become an authoritarian country if we act like we already live in one.”

In advance of Trump's inauguration on Monday, Tyler posted a piece on the BJC website in which she predicted that, with Trump again in office, there will be “an onslaught of discriminatory policies, many of which will be cloaked in the language of Christian nationalism.”

“Over the next four years, all of us will have opportunities to stand with the oppressed, the marginalized and the most vulnerable to harm,” she wrote.
