‘Pathetic’ or ‘prophetic’?: 5 Christians' reactions to bishop's sermon rebuking Trump
Tony Perkins

Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Christian organization the Family Research Council, took to his X account to take issue with Budde's comments.
“The cause of America’s decline was not what was sitting in the pew but what was standing behind the pulpit. What we heard today was not a prophetic voice from the church, but rather pathetic,” he tweeted.
Perkins’ organization held its own Inauguration-centered worship service on Sunday, in advance of the National Cathedral’s gathering, known as The Inauguration Praise and Prayer Convocation.
At the Sunday service, Perkins said that "the church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state.”
“If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority,” Perkins said. “We cannot speak prophetically to those to whom we're seeking approval. … We do not need the approval of government. We are called as a prophetic voice of God."
